Survivor gear can be found randomly when searching a map or killing infecteds (very similar to how upgrade kits are found). This equipment will appear in a special area above your backpack slots (when backpack is open). Unlike normal items, picking these items up costs not only rest, but food and water as well.
Survivor gear provides numerous stats, with the first and health being fixed and others semi random (you can have duplicate stats too). Each item will have between 1-3 random stats.
There are 4 types of survivor gear: bags, masks, gloves, belts. Taking a survivor item will automatically add it to the survivor gear bar, replacing an existing item of the type if need be. Clicking the icon above your backpack will toggle the item's visual on and off; this won't remove the stats however. Survivor gear now has a confirmation added to picking up survivor gear so you don't accidentally replace your well loved gear by accident. Survivor items aren't tradeable.
Survivor gear can be found in average to exceptional quality. The quality of an item effects the power of random stats, mirroring the stats of upgrade kits up to that quality (so an exceptional item can have random stats of any quality, while good quality could only have poor-good level stats). Quality does not affect the number of stats, or which random stats are given.
Survivor gear is different from clothing in many ways:
- If you die completely they disappear. They won't be found in the backpack you left when you died.
- You cannot add upgrade kits to it.
- You can't own multiple of a type and swap between them.
Note: these bags only add stats, they do not increase your inventory size.
